Peres started the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Rondipo Park in Miami, Florida, on April 26 and pitched six innings of four-hit ball with one walk and nine strikeouts to earn the win.
Perez, a prospect from the Dominican Republic, is the No. 1 prospect in Miami and No. 4 in the majors according to MLB.com’s prospect rankings. He has a fastball that tops out at over 100 miles per hour (160.9 km/h) and a sharp slider.
Perez made his big league debut on March 13 and has made an immediate impact. In nine games (47 innings), he went 5-1 with a 1.34 ERA. In this game, he used his fastball, which topped out at 99.9 mph (160.8 km/h), to cook Pittsburgh hitters.
MLB.com wrote, “Perez will soon lose his rookie status and graduate from the prospect ranks. But in this outing, Perez proved why he’s Miami’s No. 1 prospect, and not only that, he put up some pretty amazing numbers.” Miami manager Skip Schumaker also praised Perez’s pitching, calling it “unbelievable.”
After setting a new single-game strikeout record in his last outing, Perez has now gone 21 consecutive innings without allowing a run, the longest streak among major league pitchers. He also recorded three consecutive six-inning shutouts – against Seattle on Aug. 15, Toronto on Aug. 21 and Pittsburgh today – making him the youngest pitcher (20 years, 71 days) to record three or more consecutive six-inning shutouts since 1901.

According to MLB.com, “Perez will soon lose his rookie status and graduate from the prospect ranks. But in this outing, he proved why he’s Miami’s No. 1 prospect, and he did it in a pretty remarkable way.” Miami manager Skip Schumaker also praised Perez’s pitching, calling it “unbelievable.”
After setting a new single-game strikeout record in his last outing, Perez has now pitched 21 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest streak among major league pitchers. He has also thrown six scoreless innings in three consecutive games – against Seattle on April 15, Toronto on April 21, and Pittsburgh today – making him the youngest pitcher (20 years, 71 days) to throw six scoreless innings in three or more consecutive games since 1901.

“I’m focused on having fun and playing with all my teammates,” Perez said. We go out there, we compete. Play a great game, put on a great show. I know I’m doing well. I know I’m doing well, but it’s not going to change much.”
Schumaker added: “We’re lucky to be able to see Perez pitch. I’ve never seen a pitcher like him. We’ve had a few guys make this kind of impact. Fernando Tatis Jr. (San Diego) or Yasiel Puig (Dodgers) in 2013. But I’ve never seen a pitcher throw like this at this age. It’s really impressive,” he said.
“I’ve also seen Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers) emerge. I actually faced Kershaw as a first baseman when he was 20 years old, and he was dominant. But he didn’t run like this. It’s a really crazy run. I don’t think Perez is going the other way,” he added.
