Talented, but very troubled prospect. Mike missed the 2008 season due to an academic situation. Everything was cleared up and he returned to the field in a big way in 2009. Back in 2007 he caught 60 passes and 10 TDs. At the midpoint of the '09 season he had 45 catches and 6 TDs. And those numbers didn't come against cupcakes. People think of Syracuse as the cupcake. Mike did that against Minnesota, Penn State, WVa, USF, etc. He's also had a unique QB. Former Duke basketball star Greg Paulus was the man feeding Williams the ball. Paulus was very up and down. Williams is able to go get the ball if Paulus just gets it close. He's had to slow down for underthrown balls. He will go up and make catches above the DB. Good player. Then things fell apart. Williams got in trouble with the coaching staff. Rather than take his punishment he decided to quit the team. Nothing is a bigger sin in sports than quitting. Coaches will deal with a jerk, a criminal, or a headcase, but they do not like quitters.
Mike is a 2nd round talent, but he will fall quite a bit in the draft. He could go as early as the 4th, but it won't shock me to see him go unpicked. |
