CJ Spiller, Running Back |
| Notes on CJ Spiller |
| Very productive 4-year player. Big time playmaker. The best RB in the draft. The best RS in the draft. And I think he could play WR in the NFL if he really wanted to. Special talent. Spiller is a gifted receiver. He has very good hands. He can catch the ball short or downfield. He has pretty good vision as a runner. He has excellent speed and burst. He's strong enough to break some arm tackles. One of the things I love about Spiller is that he is a big play guy, but isn't a Reggie Bush type that does all kinds of crazy stuff on his runs. Spiller can press the hole, then bounce the play wide and use his speed to get away from defenders. He is mostly a N-S runner. That will translate to the NFL. Spiller isn't a great inside runner. His instinct is to run to daylight. He will hit it up hard inside on some plays, but needs to do that more consistently to keep defenders honest. If not, they'll sell out to stop the outside runs. He is tough enough to be effective between the tackles. Scored at least 1 TD in each game as a Senior. Split touches with James Davis for 3 years. That was an ideal set-up. I don't see him as a traditional workhorse RB.
Spiller had a monster showing in the ACC title game. He was absolutely sensational. CJ ran 20 times for 233 yards and 4 TDs. He also caught a pass and returned 3 kickoffs. Spiller had 4 runs go longer than 36 yards. His speed was a big factor in that game. Spiller was fast enough to get into the open and then down the field. He is very good as a RS. Spiller can make the first defender miss. He then uses his burst to get some initial separation. Once he's in the clear there are very few players who will chase him down from behind. Spiller compares to Felix Jones and Chris Johnson because of his speed and ability to deliver big plays. I think he'll go in the Top 20. |
