Linval Joseph, Defensive Tackle

Notes on Linval Joseph
Only a Junior. Big player with pretty good athletic ability. Finished his career with 29.5 TFLs and 3 blocked kicks. He started 4 games as a Freshman and then became a full-time starter the next 2 years. He was flying under the radar until a strong showing at the Combine. Joseph has very good size at 6'4, 328. He ran just over a 5-second 40 in Indy. He looked pretty good doing it. He did 39 reps on the bench. You have a huge guy that can run and is powerful. Pretty good combination for a DT, huh? Put on the game tape and you see a pretty good player. Joseph is very stout. He is tough to move off the ball. He can eat up blocks. When he plays with leverage and extends his arms he gets good push. Joseph is agile, but not quick. He tried a spin move on one play. He moved okay, but it was pretty slow. Joseph put up good numbers on the year. He had 13 TFLs. Sounds impressive, but check out who they came against. He racked up 8 of the TFLs in games against Rice, Tulsa, SMU, UAB, and Appalachian State.

Joseph has really good potential. He could be an outstanding NT. He could be a good DT. I'm a little curious about him, though. He's from Florida. He was a heralded recruit. He goes to ECU? Either there were issues or grade problems. Guys like him don't get out of SEC country without something being askew. Now Joseph is coming out as a Junior. He had a good season, but hardly did anything so special that you feel like he had to come out. Odd. I don't think Joseph is a bad guy or anything like that, but NFL teams will want to study him thoroughly to make sure there are no issues. I see him as a 3rd/4th rounder, but some team could easily become enamored with his size/strength and take him in the 2nd.
