Limas Sweed, Wide Receiver

Matt's Notes on Limas Sweed
Sweed is a huge target at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds and does a nice job beating jams at the line of scrimmage. He does a nice job controlling his body and leaping to high-point the ball when thrown up to him. Is both a good downfield threat and a guy that can work the middle of the field for you. While he is not a true possession receiver, Sweed doesn’t have the kind of breakaway speed that would make him a high 1st round selection. When he gets moving he does pick up some velocity however, similar to a guy like Terrell Owens. Looks to sell his fakes well out of stems and is an above average route runner. Sweed isn’t a great athlete, but he can pick up yardage after the catch, can be used in many different ways and as I said, is really a big threat over the middle with his size and body control. Unfortunately I had to go back to 2006 for most of my report on Sweed because of a broken wrist in 2007. At times Limas can make some Sports Center plays as well.

Where do you value a player when you’re mostly going off of junior footage? I just don’t know what to say. I’ve seen him near the Top 10 and I’ve seen him in the 2nd round. If it was my team I’d value him somewhere in the 25-40 pick area. One thing that makes me wonder if I’m undervaluing him is that he never had particularly good passing quarterbacks to work with at Texas.

Tommy's Notes on Limas Sweed
Excellent size. 6’5, 215. Missed about half of Senior season with a broken wrist. Will push off to create separation, but does it subtlely. Can make tough catches. Has okay quickness, but I’m not sure about his burst off the ball. Will work the middle and catch short, ball-control type passes. Runs sloppy routes at times. Looks like he relies too much on his size. Does not run routes with conviction or make crisp cuts. Can be somewhat elusive, but isn’t a special RAC guy. Good downfield receiver. Locates the ball well and is able to adjust to it. Has good hands. Can pluck the ball away from his body. Had a great Junior season. Caught 46 passes, including 12 TDs. Averaged over 17 yards per reception and made some incredible highlight type catches. Injuries limited him to 19 catches and 3 TDs in '07. The best game of his Senior year came vs Rice. Had a long catch in that game. Ran a skinny post. Caught the ball, spun back outside, and motored down the sideline. Caught a long TD pass vs Rice. Ran a go route and just got behind the Safety for an easy TD. Caught another TD vs Rice. This one came on a post-corner route. Located the ball well and adjusted his body to make the catch. One possible concern is that most of his best games came against mediocre or weak competition. Only had 7 catches against Oklahoma in 4 years.

SUMMARY

At his best, Sweed is a big guy with good feet and body control who can pluck the ball and use his size or speed to get open. Not a workhorse receiver. He's meant to be a playmaker. Averaged over 15 yards a catch for his career and had 20 TDs. Could sneak into the 1st, but I see him as an early 2nd round type player.
