Josh Barrett, Safety

Matt's Notes on Josh Barrett
Barrett has excellent size for a strong safety at 6-foot-2, 223 pounds and had a very good Combine running a 4.35 40-yard dash at that size. He shows the ability to change directions quickly, has decent feet and good hips. He does have an upright style of play, especially in his backpedal and isn’t a guy that’s going to be great in man coverage. Despite his big frame he isn’t necessary an impact hitter which is something you’d want out of him, however he does wrap up and can lay the wood. As a senior Barrett didn’t look great when I watch him, however he was playing injured. Watching his junior film he looked much better and much faster on the field. Does a nice job playing in the box and is aggressive against the run, notching a solid amount of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

His senior season really bothered me, but with him playing injured you have to cut the guy some slack. That size/speed combination is rare. You can’t teach that, but you can teach him technique. Barrett will most likely be a 3rd round draft pick in the draft.

Tommy's Notes on Josh Barrett
Size is legit. Big guy. Isn’t showing any “suddenness” as a Senior. Range is okay for such a big guy. Pretty fluid hips. Turns well. Okay backpedal. Is a bit upright. Sloppy tackle attempt vs Oregon. Came up and had a chance to get WR for short loss, but wasn’t able to wrap up. The player only got a yard or two, but should have been stopped for a loss. Mainly plays deep or off the line. Strong. Will play the run. Talks a lot of smack. Broke up a deep ball vs UCLA. Got his hands on the pass, but could not hold on. 2 year starter at FS. Started six games his first two years, but emerged as a top player in 2006. Led ASU in tackles, had 7.5 TFLs, and 3 INTs. Struggled with injuries as a Senior and had a mediocre season. Has his degree. Cousin of former NFL RB Jerald Moore. Had a great workout at the Combine.

Because of his poor season, I pulled out a couple of games from the 2006 season. Played much better as a Junior. Tackled with authority. Looked more confident, aggressive. Will miss moving targets at times. Picked off a tipped ball vs UW. Jumped a route and almost picked off a pass when the QB tried to throw across his body into the middle of the field. Made a very good open field tackle of RB Louis Rankin. Has thick legs for a Safety. Gimme pick when the QB got his arm hit while throwing.

SUMMARY

Terrific size/speed guy. You just don't find many 220 pound DBs who run in the 4.3 range. The Junior tape and Combine says 2nd round. His Senior tape says late round guy. I'm very interested to see what teams do. I'd be willing to spend a 3rd round pick on him.
